Lay back, close your eyes and bathe in the simple sounds of the every day, whether it be the consistent rhythm of static noises or the steady flow of water accompanied by the soothing voice of a lover. This playlist flaunts the curious calmness and strange sensuality of the whispers and hums that come out of ordinary objects or people. Opening with a song recorded through the 1920s to 1940s, Estudiantina Smyrniote’s ‘Trellokoritso’, translating to ‘Crazy Girl’, is filled with nostalgic sounds and harmonious voices of the time. To understand how hearing a certain tender voice can transport us to dreamy places, we join poet Molly Drake in reflecting on the power of listening in her song ‘A Sound,’ where she sings ‘a sound can take you where it will, a sound can make your heart stand still’. Through these songs, you’re cordially invited to let the music take you to new locations or revisit those sultry rendezvous you might have had with a past fling around the city.
