The intimate-yet-detached gaze of painter Xinyi Cheng hoovers over moments of solitude among men, women and animals. Encounter sensitive portraits of cigarettes smoked together or daydreamers in bed holding half-full glasses of water. From tense yellows to deep, immersive reds, Xinyi desires for her palette to be pleasing and slightly disturbing at the same time – a subtle ambiguity that smoulders, drawing you in closer. Born in Wuhan and raised in Beijing, Xinyi currently calls Paris her home, where she has an artist’s studio in the lively Belleville quarter.
