Sharine Rijsenburg

With a deep fascination for archival storytelling and cultural heritage, researcher and filmmaker Sharine Rijsenburg untangles the strings of raw humanity through narration. Her short film Bubbling Baby premiered at IFFR 2025 and was the winner of International Film Festival RTM pitch in 2024. A heated exchange between dance, rhythm and electronic music curated for the wandering eye blinks its luscious eyelashes at the audience, reminding us of the hip-hop subcultures that formed essential parts of the Afro-Caribean community in the Rotterdam of the 1990s. In Paradijsvogels (2021) and Paradeis Perdi (2024) Sharine’s thoughtful rendering of Curaçaon cultural identity, representation and colonial history reveal themselves through vivid, mesmerizing imagery, making them a tingling entanglement of socio-political commentary and pleasing storytelling.
