In a studio just outside of Cape Town, image-maker Nico Krijno collects and composes various textures, patterns, colours and forms to create an unlikely mash-up of juxtaposing visuals and disparate elements. Crafting colour-flooded assemblages that depict unresolved tensions, yet, are surprisingly consoling, allows him to invent entire new worlds, filled with humour and irony. A background in theatre has meant Nico’s vibrant work contains a theatrical, lustrous element that draws us into alternate staged realities laced with a particularly South African touch. Hence, why his two-dimensional, digitally manipulated playgrounds feature a majestic array of vibrant local fabrics, plants and colours tenderly taken from his immediate surroundings.
