Life is brimming full of complex, love/hate relationships – be they with certain foods, feelings, people or places. For Juan Brenner, this bittersweet love lies with Guatemala, the country where he was born and raised. Returning to Guatemala after working as a fashion photographer in New York City for over a decade, Juan realised his deep-rooted connection to his heritage, beautifully photographing the people in the Guatemalan Highlands to uncover the country’s history of injustice and erasure. Being a self-taught photographer – having never felt the desire to work in the confines of a school – his interests lie in the fluid and abstract nature of people and territories, as he passionately ponders the relationship between freedom and power.
