Having picked up a camera as a teenager attending punk shows in the Bronx, Elle Pérez takes raw snapshot pictures, videos and collages of their community ‘to speak to the future, to say we were alive.’ Capturing fleeting moments of defiant vulnerability, they question the relationship between seeing and love in all its forms, particularly focussing on loci of gender non-conformity. Elle lovingly captures the beauty of embracing queerness in its full complexity, recording the world in a cycle of loss and reinvention. An assistant professor at Yale University, their work has been widely exhibited both in the US and internationally.
