Seeing theatre as an instrument to have a conversation between the present and the past, Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe strives to build bridges between genres, art movements, artists and audiences. He is known for his unusual casting, extravagant staging and remarkable designs – such as the gigantic telescope suspended above the stage in Shelly Shonk Fiffit (2024) – which bring things and people together, ones that at first glance have nothing to do with each other, but who for whatever extraordinary reason can enter a new world together. As a performer, countertenor and director of operatic and visual performances, Benjamin searches for surprising connections and questions perfection, creating intriguing works for iconic theatres such as the Volksbühne in Berlin.
