Cape-Town based artist Athi-Patra Ruga’s practice straddles the divides between fashion, performance and photography. Athi-Patra subverts the bodies that are confronted to structures and ideologies, by depicting identities in their most hybrid forms, through a wealth and tropical backdrop. From re-pimping the spirit of Rococo, the aesthetics of hip-hop, or traditional Xhosa folklore, Athi-Patra uses eclectic and multicultural references, images that abound of carnal sensuality. An utopian counter-proposal bridging sensuality and intelligence together, and expressing the eroticism floating between dream and experience.
