Suriname-born Astrid Heligonda Roemer is not resting on her laurels: honoured with The P.C. Hooftprijs, one of the most prestigious Dutch literary awards, in 2016, she’s currently in Ghent working to publicise some freshly minted ideas. Respected for addressing controversial themes and pressing topics du jour with a distinct and sharp tongue, Astrid’s literary offering is contributing to a more copious public imagination. The newly released memoire Liefde in tijden van gebrek (love in times of anguish) (2016) and novel Olga en haar driekwartsmaten (Olga and her three-quarter length sizes) (2017) testify to her inimitably engaging literature.
