In an astonishing array of dream-like figures and imaginary spaces, Ayşen Kaptanoğlu pours her heart out onto canvases. Using her memories, experiences and emotions, Ayşen tries to understand what we often find difficulty in making sense of, such as feelings of pain, pleasure and nostalgia. She carefully creates colourful, vibrant paintings that are as personal as they are political, depicting the underrepresented stories of women in the violent chaos of a male-dominated society or the oppression of silenced groups. A selection of Ayşen’s wonderful works graces the pages of Extra Extra no. 21 in a portfolio feature.
