Sensing its political possibilities, French filmmaker Alice Diop arouses interactions with sensuality where you least expect it. For Alice, the simple act of looking and listening – of being engaged in a person and gripped by their charm – can generate physical pleasure. Indeed, her films spawn a feeling of delight in their composition, a passion in their message. Utilising the mesmerising artistic voice she has mastered in her remarkable career so far as a documentary-maker, Alice made her feature film debut with Saint Omer (2022). Her attraction to the gesture of watching – the ability to notice and witness – makes Alice’s shots extraordinary, allowing us to truly look at what is presented in front of us and search for sensuality in our ordinary lives.
