Beginning
Beginning is a 2020 drama by Georgian director Déa Kulumbegashvili, that follows Yana, a member of a Jehovah’s Witness community whose meeting place is destroyed by firebomb. With this rupture of steadfast routine comes an abrupt personal rupture for Yana who, with the arrival of an outsider, faces newly surfacing tensions between her life and longing, between familiarity and danger. Beautifully shot amidst striking landscapes, Beginning approaches the erotic as a confronting space of duality and possibility. Kulumbegashvili’s debut was part of the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival, and had its premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it won the FIPRESCI Prize.
